Message from Our Founder
“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.”– Thich Nhat Hanh
EJS Project Supporters,
A little over six years ago after observing the conditions within my community, and being discouraged at the bleak future, I decided that instead of waiting on a miracle that will make all of our problems and challenges go away, that I will instead take action and began working to be the change that I wanted to see. Being a new father at the time, I was apprehensive about the circumstances that would welcome my daughter as she grew older.
In my office hangs a sign that reads, “About That Action.” It’s much more than a saying on a wall. It is a value that is ingrained in everything we do and a belief that was instilled in me early in life. I knew as a young kid growing up in Delray Beach that one day I wanted to be able to be a producer of positive outcomes in my community rather than just being a product of my environment. When I look at the youth who attend our program, I see a reflection of myself and feel the responsibility to ensure that they are not excluded from any opportunities that will help them or their families be more successful. When they tell me—and show me—how they are About That Action in school, in the community and in their families, I know we are making an impact.
We are thankful for the partnership of students, families, staff, and our remarkably generous donors. It is because of time, talents, and your generosity that we are able to create a place that is welcoming to youth and suitable to their environment.
Today our program is revered throughout our community and county. We have been recognized and awarded because of how we were able to rise to challenges and provide essential services during a pandemic and the unrest following the murder of George Floyd. Furthermore, our organization has become a beacon of hope not only for enrolled students, but to their families and the greater community, as you will read about on the following pages.
With our growth comes more responsibility, which is why we work hard to codify our work. You have my promise that we will continue to do everything in our power to provide our youth with the tools necessary to be productive members of their communities. We will continue to strive for excellence and equity while being a model for our children and neighbors in Delray Beach.
Thank you for helping us make the best of 2020 through your support. You were About That Action when we needed you most, and we know we can count on you for the year ahead.
With gratitude,
Emanuel “Dupree” Jackson
